Royal Oak is a city in Oakland County in the State of Michigan. This city is a suburb of Detroit and has a population of about 58,000 people, the 8th largest municipality in Oakland County and the 27th largest in Michigan. Royal Oak was incorporated as a village in 1891 and a city in 1921 and has continued to grow into the entertainment and nightlight destination that it is today. Royal Oak has a Council-Manager form of government consisting of a mayor and six commission members, and have a below average crime rate with 76 sworn officers working for the Royal Oak Police Department as well as three fire departments located around the city. There is also great transportation with 8 numbered highways in the area-which run through Royal Oak. There is also great public transportation with rail and buses that also work through the city.

Royal Oak also has very traditional shopping all year round as the shopping district runs along Main Street and Washington Avenue downtown with numerous shops that have transformed the city into a very lively area. Royal Oak has also been awarded the distinction of “Tree City USA” every year since 1976, as the city has remained consistent and committed to tree planting and preservation. With this in mind there is the historic Saginaw Trail, which sits between Detroit and Saginaw and allows for great views and a challenging hike.
